Not Another Girl on a Milk Carton

The DC Metropolitan Police Department reported that there have been 501 cases of missing children so far in 2017, and said that 22 cases were open as of Wednesday. This disturbing information sent shock waves throughout social media and throughout the nation.

While it's important to note that many false narratives were created throughout this news cycle, Alpha Chapter, Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. felt it was still their responsibility to not only discuss this matter, but to also have a call to action.

After brainstorming, we decided the most effective thing to do was educate young girls in the community about preventative measures. We attended the Stuart Hobson Middle School’s after school program and discussed ways to stay safe, advising kids on what they can do in dangerous situations. Each child in attendance was equipped with an attachable whistle to sound the alarm when feeling endangered.

In addition, our guest speaker, an officer from the DC Metropolitan Police Department, provided tips and taught self defense moves to the kids.
